M MEMORANDUM (S1259-121- 5218)

11/10/92

FROM: Ed

TO: Shirley

CONCERNING:

Letter to John Krugler in response to 93-6315 and 93-6314.

Dear John:

Enclosed is a too lengthy memo to you on a possible third marriage for George Calvert and a note on the whereabouts of the St. Mary's County newspapers you need. I have asked our staff to see what they can do to get you copies of what film there is, but you should also try to borrow from the other libraries that seem to have copies of what you need.

Also enclosed are your disk and the microfilm you so kindly lent me. I have written the Sheffield City Libraries for permission to quote the Earl of Strafford's papers. I will be printing out the September 12, 1630 letter and hope to have a copy to send with this. If not, I will send it on when it is ready.

As yet I have not finished writing anything in a popular vein on Philip ( Lois has a nice draft of several pages, but we need to boil it down into a 'sound bite' sized presentation that will be picked up by the press. Lois and I will be trying to put something together jointly on Thursday. I am tempted to call it "Philip Calvert: Consumate Public Servant, Premier Archivist, and Keeper of Maryland's Conscience, ca. 1630-1682." Would we lose our audience with the title?

I hope to have a chance to read your paper this weekend.

All the best,

SY

Letter to

Manuscript Curator, Earl of Strafford's Papers Sheffield City Libraries Sheffield, U.K. (get address from Shashi or Doug who know where our guides to English repositories, Archival Collections are)

Dear Sirs:

I would like permission to make copies for use and citation in a report on the Coffin research for Historic St. Mary's City, of the following manuscripts in your collection of the papers of Earl of Strafford: 12/136 which deals with the person we feel is buried in the largest of three coffins (Philip Calvert), and related items 1/103-104; 10a/255; 12/42, 75, 140, 141, 176, 249; 14/117, 236; 15/141; 17/287; 22/113. I have had a chance to review these letters on the microfilm you prepared for Professor John Krugler, Marquette University.

It also would be most helpful if you could describe to me the watermarks contained on these documents. I am hoping for both a traditional posthorn watermark and an "IHS Cross, Crown, Marinaud" watermark. These watermarks appear on some official documents relating to Philip Calvert, the most important of which is an early copy in English of Maryland's charter. If you have the facilities to backlight the paper and photograph the watermarks found on the above, we would be happy to pay the expense.

Sincerely,

ECP

Thank you for your kind words.

I think the presentation copy to Oxford that I was thinking of is one that I think is mis-cataloged by David Rogers in his "The Bodleian Library and its Treasures", item 59, the Presentation binding on King Jame's Opera,, 1620. He says it is inscribed by Giles Calvert, Secretary of State, but I think he misread the signature. It is, I believe, inscribed by George Calvert.

I also found my notes on Sir Thomas Bodley who, in 1605 had an unflattering comment about Sr. Jo. Parker who "hath promised more than yow (Thomas James] have signified; but wordes are women, and deedes are men." I suspect that Bodley was not a fan of Florio ... I would love to know if the Bodleian has presentation copies from Florio who taught there for a number of years....

I will try to get to see the presentation copy this summer when I am back in England for research (hopefully in June).

If you have a contact at the Bodleian could you share it with me? I would like to write them about this volume.

I just finished reading your blog entry on George Calvert and Trinity College. Very nicely done. I wish we could afford to go on one of you excursions to the homeland, but I will have to take solace in what you write about your adventures there.

As I mentioned in a previous email, I am finishing revising an essay that I wrote on Anne Mynne and George Calvert, and am trying to track down two references I have poorly documented in my notes which I suspect only you can provide.

The first is the account of Anne Mynne's funeral procession to where she is buried, which I remember, perhaps wrongly, contained a reference to a mass/high mass at Arundel House where she had been residing. I know that George retires there after her death for atime.

The second is an entry I am sure I have seen of a gift of a book to an Oxford college on one of the King's (James/Charles?) visits to Oxford. I thought it was in the Treasure Houses of Britain catalog that first identified and published the original Mytens, but I can't find it.

Any help you could give me on these two obscure points would be most appreciated.

Henry Miller <henrym@digshistory.org> Mon, Jan 18, 2016 at 11:43 AM To: Edward Papenfuse <edpapenfuse@gmail.com>, John Krugler <jdkrugler@wi.rr.com> Hi Ed:

I was able to sort through the materials John had collected this past weekend.

You have the reference about him going to Arundel House, as John cites in English and Catholic but there are no further details.

There is the following citation in the Trumbull Mss: 36 Lock to Trumbull on 9 August 1622

"...Mr. Secretie Calverts Lady departed this life yesterday about 2 of the clock in the after noone, she was not sicke above two dayes, an untimely birth was the cause of her death for which there is much sorrowe"

A day later,(10 August) there is an entry in the St. Martins-in-the-Fields Register in Latin:

"D'na Anna Calvert uxor Hono lio viri Georgii Calvert, Equitis Aurati, moricus die tovis ultimeio elapso auferta fuit he vers, com' Hartf sepeliri"

(This may not be a totally accurate transcription of the Latin). What this indicates is that she was originally interred there on 10 August.

This is found in 1936 Register if St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Translated and edited by J. V. Kitto. Harleian Society Publication, Vol. 66 page 173.

Confirming this is another statement found in the St. Martins in the Fields Church Warden Accounts, vol II, f. 393, about receipts for Funerals. It lists "Dame Anne Calvert 50s"

So that is all the evidence I can find about her death and burial. There is nothing referencing the installation of the formal tomb at her home village.

It seems certain that she was first buried at St. Martin's, the body later moved to St. Mary's in Hertingfordbury. The chest tomb for her would have taken some time to produce so reburial must have been in later 1622 or in 1623. While I cannot prove it, an analysis of the known artisans working in the London area at that time strongly suggests that Nicholas Stone was the maker. This is mostly base on a comparison of known products of the artisans, and data about their periods of production. As Master Mason to James I, he seems a reasonable bet for someone Calvert would have turn to for this task. This hypothesis needs to be developed into a full document.

And I remember you previously inquired about the gift volume at Oxford. While there, I did a search of the collection and then asked the Boldeian library staff for assistance in locating it, including one who works in the Duke Humpfrey library where the pre-1632 volumes are kept. This had negative results. It is a puzzle. I inquired of the librarian at Trinity but they had no knowledge of it either. This does not mean it is not present, just that the inscription in it is not easily found due to the catalog procedures.

Very sorry it is not possible to provide the specific citations you are seeking. I have seen nothing about a mass said for Lady Calvert.

Sincerely,

Henry

I have one more place to look for the funeral procession to Hertingfordbury and the mass. If I find it, I will pass it on.

Dear Mr Papenfuse

Thank you for your email, but I am afraid the DNB reference to the portrait at Knole is our only reference to it. I have been unable to find it in the 1930 catalogue of the pictures at Knole and the Gallerys first director Sir George Scharf did not record it during his visits. Without any knowledge of the portraits appearance it is not possible to speculate on its relationship with Holes engraving.

Yours sincerly

Edward Papenfuse <edpapenfuse@gmail.com> Fri, Jan 22, 2016 at 5:34 PM To: Paul Cox <pcox@npg.org.uk> I very much appreciate your prompt response.

The puzzle of when Mytens painted portraits of George Calvert and possibly John Florio is one I hope I can solve. The Hole engraving of Florio is dated 1611. The Mytens portrait of George Calvert at Bourne Park was supposedly signed and dated by Mytens 1627 with a later inscription giving the sitter's name and office. Was it common for Mytens to date his portraits this way?

Usually "about 1618" is the year given for Myten's arrival at the Court. Could he have been there and begun painting as early as a1611?

I suspect that the DNB reference to the Florio portrait is taken from the Reverend Joseph Hunter, The First Part of New Illustrations ..., 1844, p. 262, or his source, the Harleain manuscripts:

There is an engraved portrait by Hole of Florio in the second edition of his Italian Dictionary, as dictionary work of great merit, but abounding also in remarkable English words and phrases, and very curious middle-age know ledge. It represents him in his fifty-eighth year, and we perceive nothing in it which can be supposed to justify the remark of Cornwallis. There was painting of him, supposed to be by Daniel Mytens, in the possession of the Dorset family but it has been lost, or perhaps regarded as representing some one else, no such portrait being mentioned in any modern list of their paintings. Yet that they had once such portrait appears from the Common.Place Book of Charles Earl of Dorset, the patron of Dryden, now among the Harleian Manuscripts (No. 4636 'Tis thought Michens, painter to King James, drew the picture of Florio which we have." This Manuscript, which contains much of the private thoughts of the Earl of Dorset, as well as many passages extracted by him from the authors whom he read, has attracted no attention, perhaps on account of its standing in the Ca talogue without any intimation of the eminent person whose book it was.

If you compare the Mytens head of George Calvert with the Hole engraving of Florio, there is a striking resemblance in pose and composition:

Charter in Latin:

Problem of extent of Legislative powers

1) Bacon's translation from Scharf:

"of and with the advice, assent, and approbation of the free men of the same Provicne, or of the greater part of them, or of their delegates or deputies, who we will shall be called together for the framing of laws, when and as often as need shall require by the aforesaid now Baron of Baltimore, and his heirs, and in the form which shall seem best to him or them, and the same to publish under the seal of the aforesaid now Baron of Baltimore ..."

From Section VII of Bacon's translation taken from the 1758 transcription of the Charter as it appears on the Chancery Rolls.

2) from the 1635 translation:

"of and with the advise assent and approbation of the Free-men of the said Province, or the greater part of them, or of their delegates or deputies, whom for the enacting of the said Lawes, when, and as often as neede shall require, We will that the said now Lord Baltemore, and his heires, shall assemble in such sort and forme, as to him or them shall seeme best, ..."

3) Brother Robert's translation for Lois Carr (6/4/1997)

"with Council by the assent and approbation of free men of the same Province or of the greater part of them or of their representatives or dputies which we will to be convoked as often as there is need by the foresaid Baron of Baltimore for the making of laws and for their publication under the seal of the present Baron of Baltimore and his heirs and thier promulgation . . .

Subject: King Charles's first response to George Calvert's 1629 plea for a new grant of land near Virginia: South of the River James, North of Sir Robert Heath's grant which ended at the Passa Magnus River.

1) The Heath grant:

The earliest grant of the lower part of the territory claimed by England under the discovery of Cabot, was made by His Majesty King Charles I., in the fith year of his reign, to Sir Robert Heath, his attorney-general. In that patent it is called, and the designated limits extended from the river Matheo in the thirtieth degree, to the river Passa Magna in the thirty-sixth degree of north latitude. There is good reason for the belief that actual possession was taken under this concession, and that, in an effort to colonize, considerable sums were expended by the proprietor and those claiming under him. Whether this grant was subsequently surrendered, or whether it was vacated and declared null for non user or other cause, we are not definitely informed. Certain it is that King Charles II., in the exercise of his royal pleasure, issued to the Lords Proprietors of Carolina two grants of the same territory with some slight modifications of boundaries. The latter of these grants, bearing date of the 30th of June in the seventeenth year of his reign, conveys to the Lords Proprietors of that portion of America between the thirty-sixth and one half and the twenty-ninth degrees of north latitude. Source: Charles C. Jones, Jr., LL.D., Chapter VI, The English Colonization of Georgia, 1733-1752, in Justin Winsor; editor, Narrative and Critical History of America, (Boston, 1887), Vol. V., Part II, p. 358. [ecp-4-2865]

2) The present day boundaries of what was intended in the Heath grant and in the first proposed 'Virginia' grant to Lord Baltimore are difficult to sort out precisely given the contemporary understanding of where the 36th parallel of north Latitude lay. John White's 1585 map of the area printed by DeBry (see Lorant, New World (1965 ed.) end pages and pp. 274-275; ecp-4-2528) does not give latitude, but his manuscript map does (Lorant, New World (1965 ed.), p. 187, and Hulton, America 1585 (1984) p. 85, plate 59). In his manuscript map,White places the 36th parallel (the southern boundary of the proposed Calvert grant and the northern boundary of Heath's) at about where Cape Hatteras is today. Subsequent early printed maps (e.g. Blaeu, Virginia and Florida, 1660 in Portinaro and Knirsch, The Cartography of North America (1987), p. 181, and Bellin, La Caroline et Georgie, ibid., p. 243 [ecp-4-3450]) show the 36th parallel on or about Albemarle Sound, near where it is shown on modern maps. It is the modern placement of the 36th parallel which is used for discussion purposes here and is illustrated by the Johnson map of North and South Carolina.

3) The bounds of the grant to Lord Baltimore to the south of the James River (a grant actually signed by the King; see the discussion of the second warrant below) which created such opposition among the Virginia investors and planters, and led to his grant being shifted (at his request) to the northward, are taken from the original first warrant for a grant to Lord Baltimore (a warrant is the first step in the process of the granting of a patent to land; see Andrews, Proceedings of a Patent Through the Seals [ecp-12-33-1]; This first warrant on behalf of Lord Baltimore passed through all the necessary steps in February 1632 and the King signed the 'bill' granting the land under the terms of the warrant). This first warrant reads in part:

all that tract or precinct of land, lying from the Bay of Chesapeack and the River of Pohatan otherwise called James River on the North (including on league from the shoare within them both) into unto the River of Passa=magnus on the South (which River is the bounds of an ohter proportion of countrey lately granted by his Maty unto Sir Robert Heath Lord Cheife Justice of the Common pleas) and betweixt Cape Henry to the East and the Creek of Warrowsqueak to the West and from the head or bottom of that Creek to the head or fountain of the great River of Wyapennock, and from thence southerly to the lymmits of the precinct granted to Sir Robert Heath, and on the East from Cape Henry afforesaid all along the sea coast to the mouth of the River of Passamagnus, together with all islands lying eastward upon the said Coast over against this porcon of land thus described, or within one league of the South Shoare of the bay of Chesapeack, and James River, from Cape Henry to Warrowsqueack.
   ...
His Maty is likewise pleased that the said Lord Baltimore shall have free fishing for himself and the people of his plantation in the Bay of Chesapeack, and the said River of Pohatan. And that all ships boates or other vessels bound to or from any part of the precinct within his Governement may passe freely with their persons and goods, without Search controule or other molestation of the other Collony there planted or of any of their fforts built or to be built hereafter. And that the said preccinct now intended to be granted by his Maty. unto the Lo. Baltimore, shall not have any dependance of the now Colony of Virginia, nor be reputed as any part thereof, nor subject to their government in any sort but shall depend and hold solely and immediately upon his Jaty and his Imperial Crowne. Fo all which you are to draw a bill accordinly fitt for his Matys Royall signature, and this ahall be your warrant.
From Whitehall the of February 1631[2]

Does anyone know where the Mytens portrait of Florio is to be found? Is the Hole engraving of the Mytens portrait? It is reminiscent of the Mytens portrait of George Calvert, 1st Lord Baltimore which was painted about the same time as the Mytens portrait of Florio.

The earliest grant of the lower part of the territory claimed by England under the discovery of Cabot,

was made by His Majesty King Charles I., in the fith year of his reign, to Sir Robert Heath, his attorney-general.

3) The bounds of the grant to Lord Baltimore to the south of the James River (a grant actually signed by the King; see the discussion of the second warrant below) which created such opposition among the Virginia investors and planters, and led to his grant being shifted (at his request) to the northward, are taken from

the original first warrant for a grant to Lord Baltimore (a warrant is the first step in the process of the
granting of a patent to land; see Andrews, Proceedings of a Patent Through the Seals [ecp-12-33-1];

This first warrant on behalf of Lord Baltimore passed through all the necessary steps in February 1632 and the King signed the 'bill' granting the land under the terms of the warrant). This first warrant reads in part:

all that tract or precinct of land, lying from the Bay of Chesapeack and the River of Pohatan otherwise

called James River on the North (including on league from the shoare within them both) into unto the River of Passa=magnus on the South (which River is the bounds of an ohter proportion of countrey lately granted by his Maty unto Sir Robert Heath Lord Cheife Justice of the Common pleas) and betweixt Cape Henry to the East and the Creek of Warrowsqueak to the West and from the head or bottom of that Creek to the head or fountain of the great River of Wyapennock, and from thence southerly to the lymmits of the precinct granted to Sir Robert Heath, and on the East from Cape Henry afforesaid all along the sea coast to the mouth of the River of Passamagnus, together with all islands lying eastward upon the said Coast over against this porcon of land thus described, or within one league of the South Shoare of the bay of Chesapeack, and James River, from Cape Henry to Warrowsqueack.

   ...
His Maty is likewise pleased that the said Lord Baltimore shall have free fishing for himself and the

people of his plantation in the Bay of Chesapeack, and the said River of Pohatan. For all which you are to draw a bill accordinly fitt for his Matys Royall ignature, and this ahall be your warrant.

From Whitehall the of February 1631[2]
